Cantabria in the Summer Holidays

We’ve been busy following a number of bloggers trips to Cantabria and are not surprised how much they LOVE the region. They’re not alone. We loved it so much we located our travel business here (Totally Spain has been designing custom trips across Spain and Portugal since 2000!) It’s getting a bit busier here and the season is only just beginning. In addition to the surfers and fans of sailing that are starting to arrive into the bay of Santander, we also have the lecturers and students registering for the UIMP Summer university. Yip, it’s Summertime in Santander :)

La Rioja Winery Region: Award Winning Tips

Rather like its wine, the region of La Rioja in Northern Spain is an elegant and very traditional region – nothing too brash or overly showy here. It’s famous for its ruby red wine – it was the first region to achieve ‘Denominacion de Origin’ (DO) in Spain but it’s also well known here for its cuisine and charming countryside. At Totally Spain, we’ve been planning trips to La Rioja for over 16 years, and here’s our award-winning guide to the region!

Gardens in Spain – Parks, Palaces & More

Are you interested in gardening and keen to visit some gardens in Spain? You’d better strap yourself in then, because we’ve put together the perfect guide to planning your green-fingered trip to Spain. Each of our gardens is very different – as a result of its location, climate or history. In Andalusia, you’ll find the Moorish influenced courtyards and gardens with in-built irrigation canals and water features. In Madrid, you’ll find a very different offering with a more regal tone. And in Catalonia? You’ll see some Gaudi creativity and some Costa Blanca views to die for! Here at Totally Spain – the Spain based travel agent and specialists in custom travel to Spain since 2000 – we never cease to be inspired by these amazing gardens. Unusual Andalusia – Hidden Treasures in Southern Spain

The challenge when visiting Andalusia is often shortlisting what to see and do. Millions of people visit the region every year and most of those will be visiting the Cathedral of Seville, the Mezquita of Cordoba, and the Alhambra in Granada – which all feature in the top 15 monuments in Spain. Although we adore these places, these busy sights aren’t always what make a holiday really special. Our clients most-treasured memories in Andalusia often take place at the more unusual locations…

The Many Ways of Doing the Camino de Santiago. What’s yours?

Most mornings on our way to the office in Cantabria we pass a few Camino de Santiago walkers doing the coastal route as they walk from Güemes to Somo to catch the ferry to Santander. It’s lovely to see the ‘peregrinos‘ or pilgrims with the St James shell on their backpacks. And when we get to the office, we often continue with the St James Way theme as we organise quite a few custom trips for people wanting to experience the Camino de Santiago in a multitude of ways.

The Great Cantabrian Outdoors – A Slice of Heaven not to be Missed at the Picos de Europa

As a Spain-based travel specialist, there’s nothing we love more than exploring this amazing country. We (that is Ken and Belen of Totally Spain) have just returned from a Winter weekend break in the Cantabrian Picos de Europa Mountains with our two daughters and friends, Juan and Veronica, and their two young boys. The tourist season is about to kick off there and we were delighted to revisit this stunning part of Cantabria known as the Liebana Valley and see what it had in store for us and our clients. The result was a stunning weekend where we all agreed that the Great Cantabrian Outdoors is heaven made and ideal for visitors of all ages to enjoy. You simply have to go there. It’ll do you good.
