Cantabria in the Autumn is a wonderful place to visit and going by the weather so far all the signs are that this year it will be a warm one. At Totally Spain we’ve been living and planning custom holidays in the North of Spain since the year 2000, and we love to encourage those who can, to travel to Cantabria out of season. It can be a real treat for many reasons and so much easier to get around once the summer visitors have gone home.
We’ve has been planning custom trips around Northern Spain ever since Totally Spain started out back in the year 2000. We initially set up our business in Vitoria in the Basque Country – which was then an unknown part of Spain. Today we are still based in Northern Spain in Cantabria. Although we plan trips for all over Spain and Portugal, we love taking the time to write about this superb region so here you have it – our shiny new Insider Guide on What to See and Do in Northern Spain.
We’re lucky to be based in Cantabria which is home to some amazing museums. When we leave the Totally Spain office (we’re a Spain-based travel agent and specialist in custom travel to Spain since 2000), there’s nothing we enjoy more than visiting these museums in Cantabria’s capital, Santander, and throughout the rest of the region too.
We’ve been hooked on a cult book about immortality by the Spanish writer Eva Garcia Saenz. It’s a great read that unfolds in a museum in Santander in Northern Spain and takes us back to our cave dwelling past in Cantabria and other moments in history before returning to contemporary Spain. The book is now available in English and we recommend it for an afternoon of escapism. But living and working here in Cantabria, we know you don’t have to be immortal to experience the past. We have excellent museums, eye-popping cave art, postcard-perfect medieval towns, achingly cool urban retro architecture and chocolate-box hamlets on our doorstep, to step back in time, whenever we fancy…
We’ve been busy following a number of bloggers trips to Cantabria and are not surprised how much they LOVE the region. They’re not alone. We loved it so much we located our travel business here (Totally Spain has been designing custom trips across Spain and Portugal since 2000!) It’s getting a bit busier here and the season is only just beginning. In addition to the surfers and fans of sailing that are starting to arrive into the bay of Santander, we also have the lecturers and students registering for the UIMP Summer university. Yip, it’s Summertime in Santander
If you love Spain, you’re going to adore Extremadura. It’s got everything you want from a trip to Spain – interesting history, stunning landscapes, a blend of old and new architecture, and amazing food and fun. Although you may not have heard about it – it is a popular destination with Spanish tourists but it does feel “off the beaten track”. This wasn’t always the case. In Roman times it was hugely important and in the Middle Ages it was on the Silver Way – a busy commercial and pilgrimage route connecting Merida with Astorga. And following the Discovery of the Americas it was a hive of activity. See what we recommend visiting in Extremadura and start planning your trip!
